College Football is coming. Cal fans - be ready. This is our year.
I just found out this morning that the BCS system is going to change a little bit. The formula that they use to rank teams will remain the same. However, they will have one more BCS Bowl-type of game at the end of the season. This game does not have a name yet, but it's going to be the real BCS Championship Game. January 8th in Glendale, Arizona - the new Arizona Cardinals stadium right outside of Phoenix.
What does this mean? More precisely, what does this mean for Cal?
Well first, this would've benefitted Cal 2 years ago when we were snubbed out of the Rose Bowl. Here's why:
The top 2 teams at the end of the regular season will be going to this new championship bowl game, which means 8 teams from No.3 and down will appear at the 4 BCS Bowls - Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Fiesta. Simply, more opportunities. This means that Cal would've actually gone to the Rose Bowl (or some other BCS Bowl game possibly) because USC and OU would've been at this championship game instead of the Orange Bowl, making room for Cal and one more team to appear at a BCS Bowl game.
Now, the important question. Is this going to benefit us this year? I think so.
Preseason rankings are looking pretty good for Cal. Most of them rank Cal in the top 11, 12. Many of them put us at No.2 in Pac-10. I heard that one organization actually picked Cal to win the Pac-10 over USC (jeaahh). Most likely, we'll be in a similar situation as we were in 2 years
ago. And if that happens, we will actually go to a BCS Bowl game. If we win the Pac-10 conference, then of course, we'll go to the covetted Rose Bowl.
So, to sum up all this: see y'all at the Rose Bowl Cal fans.
